A man denies stabbing to death a mother of two who once lived above him in a Scarborough home, saying he was nowhere near the place on the night she died.
Mathiyalagan Selvanayagam, 27, took the stand for the first time in his defence today and told one of his lawyers, Anida Chiodo, that he does not know how his blood got into a bedroom, bathroom and hallway wall of the home where the 39-year-old mother of two was found.
“I did not go there,” he testified through a Tamil translator in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
The naked body of Santhaluximy Shanmugharajah was found by her husband at about 7 a.m. Dec. 30, 2000, in an upstairs spare bedroom of their Deanscroft Sq. home.
Selvanayagam has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.
“Were you involved in having a romantic relationship with her?” Chiodo asked.
“No. No such relationship at all,” he replied.
He also denied even being at the home, from which he had earlier moved out, on the evening or morning before the woman’s body was found. “Did you kill Mrs. Shanmugharajah?” Chiodo asked.
“No I did not kill her,” he said.
The trial continues today.
