Legislature faces health-care debate

He meets Tuesday with Putin, who has been assailed for using terrorist threats as an excuse to crack down on free speech while beefing up security forces.
The toll grows to 69 women

Despair over the city's missing women deepened yesterday with the addition of eight names, bringing to 69 the number of prostitutes who were murdered or have disappeared. Police said the eight women identified come from an ongoing review of missing person's files rather than the discovery of DNA or human remains at the pig farm at the centre of Canada's largest serial murder investigation.

Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority government has averted collapse and made history with last night's eleventh-hour agreement to make a substantial change in its throne speech. It was a change prompted by a separatist opposition party, the Bloc Québécois, and more amendments may be incorporated eventually from the Conservative opposition.It is a sign, Martin boasted, of a thriving democracy in a shaky minority."I actually think this is pretty healthy," Martin said.
